In books such as Cathedral and the later tales included in the collected stories volume Where I'm Calling From, Carver revealed himself to be a more expansive writer than in the earlier published books, displaying Chekhovian sympathies toward his characters and relying less on elliptical effects. Carver's stories were brilliant in their detachment and use of the oblique, ambiguous gesture, yet there were signs of a different sort of sensibility at work. Suggestive rather than explicit, and seeming all the more powerful for what is left unsaid, Carver's stories were held up as exemplars of a new school in American fiction known as minimalism or dirty realism, a movement whose wide influence continues to this day. Beneath his pared-down surfaces run disturbing, violent undercurrents. In collections such as Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Raymond Carver wrote with unflinching exactness about men and women enduring lives on the knife-edge of poverty and other deprivations.

I was a teacher at the time, and was already thinking of how I could use the story in the classroom with my students, since I loved incorporating picture books into math lessons. Initially, I was writing it as a picture book about two elephant friends, one of whom is captured to be a show elephant. The protagonist, Hastin, actually came into the story after Nandita the elephant and the circus owner Timir did. How did you discover and get to know your protagonist? How about your secondary characters? Your antagonist? Still he wonders–will they both survive long enough to escape? With the help of Ne Min, a wise old man who seems to know all about elephants, Hastin protects Nandita as best as he can. The crowds that come to the circus see a lively animal who plays soccer and balances on milk bottles, but Hastin sees Nandita, a sweet elephant and his best friend, who is chained when she’s not performing and punished until she learns her tricks perfectly. He thinks it will be an adventure, but he isn’t prepared for the cruel circus owner. To work off the debt, Hastin leaves his village in northern India to work in a faraway jungle as an elephant keeper. Ten-year-old Hastin’s sister has fallen ill, and his family must borrow money to pay for her care in the hospital. The beauty of the natural world is teeming in the forest and Hamsun is too wise not to use its beauty for his own ends. McFarlane's translation from Norwegian, Knut Hamsun's Pan (1894) is ringing in one's ears with its lyrical presentation of man's inner nature. I'm very much taken by the poetic expressions in this novel. I turn my head, the strangely heavy air ebbs away and I see something like the back of a spirit who wanders soundlessly through the forest. The wind calls to me and my soul bows in obedience to the call, I feel myself lifted out of my context, pressed to an invisible breast, tears spring to my eyes, I tremble-God is standing somewhere near looking at me. What is it? I look about me and see no one. A slight breeze springs up, an unnatural gust of wind strikes me, a strange rush of air. "It is the moon," I say softly and passionately, "it is the moon!" And my heart beats gently towards it. I look up at the crescent moon standing in the sky like a white shell and I feel a great love for it, I feel myself blushing. I close my eyes.Īfter an hour, all my senses are throbbing in rhythm, I am ringing with the great stillness, ringing with it. A fir cone falls from its branch, and then a dry twig or two.
